Henri Matisse is one of the best-known French painters in the world. A documentary that reads like a story, covering key moments in his life to help understand his art. A book for ages 5 and up, to learn everything about the master of color and movement.
The "painter of happiness"
Matisse was always curious about landscapes and art around the world, and being an adventurer at heart, he traveled extensively. Throughout his artistic career, he had a constant thirst for discovery. He painted, drew, sculpted, and designed stained glass and ceramics, eventually inventing his own technique: gouache-painted paper cut-outs. Matisse is also one of the fathers of Fauvism, an artistic movement where the highly expressive colors of the paintings are more important than the drawing itself. He is nicknamed "the painter of happiness," because he painted joyful subjects, but above all because, despite the trials he faced, he remained optimistic and creative until the end of his life!
A didactic work combining photos and illustrations
The book features 13 works—12 paintings and 1 stained-glass window with a ceramic piece: "Village in Brittany," "Luxury, Calm and Pleasure," "Interior at Collioure," "Blue Nude, Souvenir of Biskra," "The Dance," "Interior with Eggplants," "Odalisque with Red Trousers," "The Dance" (3 panels), "The Romanian Blouse," "Polynesia, the Sea," "Icarus," "The Sorrow of the King," and the interior of the Rosary Chapel in Vence (stained glass and ceramic). To present these works, an endearing little mascot guides the reader through the pages of the book, providing additional information or anecdotes about each one, using simple words and accessible concepts.
